Healthwatch Cheshire publishes ‘The Value of Local Independent Voice’

Healthwatch Cheshire has published a new document setting out the value of local, independent patient voice in health and social care across Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester.

The Value of Local Independent Voice brings together 12 years of community insight, real resident experiences, and independent evidence to make the case for why an organisation like Healthwatch — rooted locally, trusted by communities, and independent of the services it scrutinises — matters to the people of Cheshire.

The publication comes at a significant moment for patient voice in England. In March 2026, The King’s Fund — jointly with Healthwatch England — published The Future of Patient Voice: Learning from the Healthwatch model, an independent review which found that Healthwatch’s independence had been central to its credibility and effectiveness. What the document covers

The document sets out the difference Healthwatch Cheshire has made across a wide range of services, from GP access and NHS dentistry to hospital discharge and diagnostics. It includes case studies, resident quotes, and examples of where listening to people has led to real, tangible improvements in local services.

It also addresses the current national picture. Following the government’s announcement in June 2025 that Healthwatch would close as part of wider NHS reforms, The King’s Fund published an independent review of the Healthwatch model. Its findings are clear: independence was the most important factor in Healthwatch’s effectiveness, enabling trusted relationships with communities — particularly those less likely to engage with statutory bodies — that other organisations have been unable to replicate.
