The future of Healthwatch and the importance of local, independent patient voice

It was proposed following the Review of Patient Safety across the health and care landscape led by Dr Penny Dash and in the NHS 10 Year Health Plan, to close Healthwatch England and the 152 local Healthwatch bodies across the country.

Whilst no final decisions have been made, we feel this is an important moment to reflect on the role of local, independent patient voice in health and social care.

Why independence matters

For more than a decade, local Healthwatch organisations have played a unique role: offering people a safe and independent way to share their experiences, helping to improve services for everyone. As a local and impartial voice, we are able to:

Listen to people from all communities and backgrounds, especially those who might otherwise go unheard
Report concerns and highlight good practice across health and social care services directly to decision makers and stakeholders
Work constructively with local systems, while remaining separate from them

The independence of Healthwatch has helped to build trust—particularly among those who are vulnerable, facing health inequalities, or unsure where to turn.

Continuing our work locally

As national discussions continue to take place, we want to reassure our community that we remain here to support local residents. Our work continues:

We are still listening to your experiences of health and care
We are still sharing what you tell us with those who make decisions locally
We are still working with partners to ensure services meet people’s needs

This remains a time of change in the NHS and social care, and we know how important it is that local voices continue to shape local services.

Looking ahead

While the future structure of Healthwatch is uncertain, what is clear is the ongoing need for independent, community-focused representation in health and care. Whatever happens next, the principle that people should be heard, respected, and involved in shaping the services they use must remain central.
